I think the collective punishment would make more sense if it was easier to test out professions (and maybe removing some of the options) before choosing. 
You also get paid if you choose a different kind of studying ! We pay everyone over 18 if they study for some time.

I think phd is hard work though, and the pay isn't that good

Oh yeah, for sure there must be better ways to enforce that but hahahahaha why WOULD they make it better when they can just pay less and shorten it?

I mean, for me it is less about the money and more about studying
I would love nothing more than to study, study and study some more, than work in a field that lets you research and study more
life for me is a never ending research about life and I am just that thirsty for knowledge 
 that's fair
This is so true! We don't have some clever economics people who's calculated that it'll cost the society billions in a few years because less people get educated, and the ones that do will not have the same skill set... or something (we did have that happen)

Honestly same, but I feel like it's easier to study when you don't have the same worry for living. PhD does sound perfect to spend time studying
