ill tell you this about spongebob- fuckin gen xers never saw it. it's the hardest thing about my age gap relationship i have with doug is he never watched fuckin spongebob and im constantly making references he dont understand. every now and then i sit him down and force him to watch an episode so that we can understand each other better. like dont date a dude who is forty two if u cant handle that missing peice of cultural context.
Lmfao the guy I'm interested in is only 2 or 3 years younger than me so if we move beyond friendship territory we will be fine

As a retail worker I work with a lot of gen z, so spongebob is how I bond with them! This girl who is 7 1/2 years younger than me... she never saw dying for pie! She watched the episode and texted me her reaction to the ending... amazing

I feel like millenials and zoomers bonding over spongebob is to gen x and millenials bonding over simpsons
lmao ive literally done the same with young coworkers lol

god gen x loves simpsons thats such a good comparison lmao

we couldn't afford a gir hoodie so my mom bought a $5 4"x6" iron on patch from Hot Topic and made me my Invader Zim shirt

I was also a very big Rugrats fan
like, it ended at 8pm when I was little and that was my bedtime so it was literally my nightly ritual to eat a big pickle and watch rugrats with my grandma

Everyone loves the simpsons but gen x (and arguably early y) grew up when the show was a cultural phenomenon

Same for millenials and spongebob... like all preceding generations like it as much as I do but I was the core demographic when it premiered so my love is extra pure

it wasn't for me but.. i don't really think generations after millennials have something that is unifying to the same degree as the things you guys have mentioned so far because of an over-saturation? of the market

I mean, it may just not be a TV show for them.
I'd say a lot of kiddos find tik tok to be unifying
and the ones who don't, probably feel the same way as folks who felt left out for not enjoying spongebob

I wouldn't say I "hated" it but I definitely didn't want to be a part of the i-love-spongebob crowd

I genuinely hated it, I found Spongebob to be obnoxious and horrible.

I definitely appreciate it more as an adult than I ever did as a child.

Im not sure. I dont have kids so I'm out of the loop in terms of youth culture. I know a bit about young adult culture cuz I work with a lot of ppl age 18-24 and have a zoomer sister (shes almost 19) but I'm no longer hip and with it you know? I also think its early to tell since alpha is so young. Some are still babies (literally).

I think you're onto something with tik tok, tho. I could see Adventure Time maybe being a unifying gen z and alpha thing? Not sure. I think stephen universe could also be a contender?   Probably tik tok. Time will tell.

Zoomers absolutely love adventure time tho, I can tell you that much.

It's a great show and they're lucky they got to grow up with it. Fuck even when I was in high school everyone was watching it, just quality stuff, to be a kid raised on it would be something else (it was my go to show to watch baked as fuck when I was a teen tho lol)
