I hate all rap music. Most rap music only talk about sex and drugs, and it's super cringey.

idk a lot of Kpop groups have a similar sound, and they all have the similar concept of you know dance and stuff being a huge part of it just like a lot of boy/girl bands? So in terms of sound I wouldn't say it's entirely the same, but in some aspects yes it's kind of the same?

And for me as someone who would say "I don't get the hype" or at least that I don't get the level of extremity for the hype. It's because I don't really like the sound a lot of the groups have and I prefer bands and groups where ya know one person plays the drum someone plays guitar someone sings and blah blah

because to me that feels more about the music than about purely the people performing it? Idk if that makes sense but that would be my reasoning behind saying something like that

Yeah I get what you mean!!
I view kpop more as like a sub-genre within pop, amongst all other genres. That's why I feel like questioning it's popularity is pointless. It's music! I don't question the popularity of spanish music, which is popular, for example, just because it's another language

Also mild topic change but I feel like kpop has more charm (dancing, performance and personality) and maybe that's why people get attached easily? I don't like kpop anymore but I personally feel like most kpop idols are way more interesting than western artists

If you automatically write off all foreign media simply because you don't like subtitles, you're missing out.
dubs aren't always great and a lot of the time, the acting isn't the same or convey the same emotion... that and it's just really annoying to see the mouth not line up.

So many fantastic films and tv and music are in foreign languages. In music, mainly, emotion can still convey even if you don't know the words.
Films and TV, some of the best stuff is foreign and is my favourite.

(ofc, I don't mean people who genuinely can't read subtitles but people who go "Oh that film sounds really cool - wait, it's subtitled? ugh, no.";)

You don't notice them though.

Yes, when you first get into them, it does take some getting used to (this could just be me though, I started with subtitles when I was around 8/9 so I sometimes struggled at keeping up with them).
But films/shows with subtitles are designed to be paced so that you can read them and still keep up with the flow of the show.

One of my favourite tv shows recently is a Japanese reality show called Terrace House and it's literally the most calm and relaxing show ever, even with the subtitles.

I'll admit - the only downfall with subtitles is that it can't be background noise. I'm a big watcher of tv in the background so that can be a little annoying.

It just kinda makes me a little sad. Like, watching foreign tv and film is one of the easiest ways to immerse yourself in the culture of another country so to then completely cut yourself off from an entire world of media, idk. To me it just creates connotations of a close-minded person.

What really annoys me is my dad once started watching a film on Netflix, not realising it was in Spanish. He started moaning and almost turned it off but I convinced him to watch it and give it a shot. In the end, he really liked it and said it was a great film. I asked if he'd watch any more foreign films - he said no because he doesn't like subtitles

you just said it was great !!

saame !! I started watching anime dubbed and never thought anything of it. I started watching subbed because dubbed typically rarely finished an anime or didn't dub certain ones.
It completely altered the way I watched it. It conveyed so much more emotion and depth, especially now that the voices finally fitted the characters (like anime dubs typically all use the exact same voice actors... and it's noticeable).

I still watch some dubbed but only after I've watched the show in subbed first. Even then, I only watch dubbed if: I'm unwell, watched it originally in dubbed (like FruBa or Ouran HSHC) or have it on in the background. Can't stand watching it properly dubbed
