i think its only is betrayal if the translator actively do not care for the source and alters the text to appease themselves rather than the targer or source
and that happens so very often !!! especially nowadays that books are mass produced

but i think regarding translation like that at its core is doing it a disservice! and its disregarding translation beyond litterature where its a tool to bring people together and bring information
