I’m okay with beautiful or physically strong girls (or a combo of both), but a well written character is one that’s complex, whose actions, feelings and thoughts make sense and carry the story (not the other way). Authors nowadays think that giving a girl a sword and not sexualize her to death is enough to make a StROnG fEMalE character. Isayama isn’t the exception.
I liked the concept of making Mikasa a tragic character, the potential was there, but it was terribly done. There ARE women like her, obsessive, dependent, overprotective, etc but when you think she’s going to move forward, she’s not allowed to grow out of he obsession because Ereh! Right up til the ending. Speaking of which, the ending made me incredibly sad, seeing her chained to Eren’s grave, not being able to move on after three years, is gut-wrenching. What are we supposed to learn from her? Accept men’s mistreatment because they love you and be miserable?
I loved Hange during the first three seasons because she loved her job and was passionate about it, she cared for Levi and Erwin, had a sense of humor, was dense (a flaw), smart (because she studied! Not because the plot demanded it), then she was made commander, and it’s okay if she was not fit for the position, but instead of making her grow, Isayama reduced her to “sUrVeY cOrPs sPirIT” and “wHaT wOulD eRwIn dO”. Post time-skip ruined her and the potential was lost because Isayama needed to make Armin the better option 🤡
Then you have Annie. I liked her too because, to me, she was the embodiment of survival and adaptation, from her fighting skills (she trained! Unlike Mikasa, she worked her whole life to get them) to her personality. A great villian, cold hearted but not really, she did what she had to and so what. But the time-skip, again, made her irrelevant and reduced her to Armin’s girl. Fucking Christ.
Historia was the best and I’m not going into her too much, because here we all love her for the same reasons. Mentally strong girl, able to fight her own father, snap the protagonist out of his bullshit, smart, etc. As well as a great backstory that justified her personality. Krista being a facade was a beautifully done twist. Isayama then went and made her marry her childhood bully and forced her to be a puppet head to the fascists, making the Uprising arc useless.
And then there’s Ymir. The strongest person in the world is a slave to a rapist king because she’s in love with him. Not much I can say.
Gabi is literally Eren as a girl, but worse. Pieck and Hitch are waifu fanservice.
I’m not saying the men from AoT weren’t treated badly (especially Reiner and Eren), but their characters were butchered in a completely different way. The ending, especially, subjugated the women and girls to men’s actions and desires, or made them just plain incompetent. You don’t see Jean being a slave to Mikasa, right? Armin is no one’s boyfriend, he’s his own person (even if he’s a retard). But of course we have to see Mikasa suffering for Eren, or Historia carrying the burden of Eren’s actions, and Annie being Armin’s girl. I would never comprehend authors’ decisions to butcher women like this.
TLDR; fuck Isayama. It started great for female characters, but the time skip and ending subjugated the women and girls to men’s actions and desires, or made them just plain incompetent. Mikasa is forever chained to Eren, Annie is just Armin’s girlfriend, Historia is now a puppet, Hange’s potential to be a good leader was wasted.
i also wish eren hadn't been forgiven for what he did 😐 isayama really do be having worms for brains
