I for sure suggest looking up some pictures, i know on pinterest alot of people post islands that gives you an idea on how a layout can look! 
Personally my houses are scattered all over my island! One thing i also do suggest, is placing your nook shop, somewhat close to where you might spend most your time. For me i do alot of fishing and run around from the airport to the shop, so i placed mine right at the front left!
yeah i think im for sure gonna have the stores more at the front especially if i get nintendo online again (currently am a bit broke so i wont buy it for now) so that ppl can come over and reach the stores easily :d ill check out pinterest, ty
