I used to be for freedom of speech but the older and wiser I get the more I understand that it's a huge problem that we allow people to say whatever they want without consequences. If making the freedom of speech laws more strict would mean that the world would become a giant echo chamber to me, that's fine by me. Anything to make the world a nicer place.

Firstly it's called Article 10: Freedom of Expression (freedome of speech is essentially a clause).

Freedom of expression is a fundamental human right. It reinforces all other human rights, allowing society to develop and progress. The ability to express our opinion and speak freely is essential to bring about change in society.

Free speech is important for many other reasons. Index spoke to many different experts, professors and campaigners to find out why free speech is important to them.

Index on Censorship magazine editor, Rachael Jolley, believes that free speech is crucial for change. “Free speech has always been important throughout history because it has been used to fight for change. When we talk about rights today they wouldn’t have been achieved without free speech. Think about a time from the past – women not being allowed the vote, or terrible working conditions in the mines – free speech is important as it helped change these things” she said.

Free speech is not only about your ability to speak but the ability to listen to others and allow other views to be heard.

But should it be?

Guide on Article 10of the European Convention on Human Rights

i advice reading that also, as George Washington said, "If freedom of speech is taken away, then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter." Freedom of speech has been a basic freedom of most countries (like mine which is the UK and are you in the states, if so then yours too) since the start.

It lets us express our thoughts, opinions, and beliefs as we choose. The door of discussion and opportunity is wide open, being compared to a country with very little freedom in this aspect.

Just consider what it would be like without this simple, but powerful freedom. You could not say anything against political leaders, may not be free to practice a certain religion, and could get punished for something you say.

People have to endure this all over the world. For them, the door is closed on their ability to speak their minds, and if they do try to crack the door open, they suffer severe penalty. Freedom to say what we want is often overlooked in our country, and not considered to be the incredibly important right that it is.

If you are against manipulation of the brain through propaganda or lobotomy (not that we use lobotomy for that reason anymore but just as an example), that means you you should be against it when it's being used in your favor as well.

If you think brainwashing is wrong, that means it's just as wrong whenever the what you would call the "good side" does it and not those you don't like.
duh
It's not that obvious for everyone. Most people engage in....propaganda and if you don't, you get punished for it. They want to control us

Sounds great to me! As long as we put GOOD political leaders in charge.

but we wouldn't be able to as if we take away the freedom of speech clause then we won't be allowed to vote who we want to lead our respective countries

Good is relative, and even good leaders should be criticised and satirised, it's an essential part of democracy.

Voting wouldn't be necessary either. The only reason we need to vote for our political leader in today's society is because the majority aren't good, moral people who want the best for us. If we put a real honest person in charge all would be satisfied and if not, they would be given an opportunity to get out.
