Inborn swedes move out from places with lots of non-european immigrant. This is one of the strongest forces behind the growing ethnic segregation, according to one study about the moving patterns in the countrys twelve largest cities during the ages 1990-2007.

-Yes, we found a so called tipping point on 3-4 percent. When the proportion of non-european immigrants is stat big in a residential area (google translated that word) then the swedes start to move out from there, says Emma Neuman, national economic scientist in Linné University in Växjö.

Highly educated and high-income earners move first, which leads to that the ethnic segregation takes place parallell with the economical.

-The effect was actually stronger in 1990's. Back then the swedes was able to move out if only a few immigrants moved in, says Emma Neuman. Maybe it can be interpreted that we have becoming a little bit more tolerant, but the overall development seems to be hard to brake.

Immigrants from european countries gives on the other side no moving-effect, instead it is about non-european immigrants. It reminds of the phenomenon white flight in USA, where whites move out from places when blacks move in.

-It i possiby a worry for the quality of the place, schools and the risk for price fall, or that you have negative attitude against non-european immigrants, says Emma Neuman.

In another research the sociologist Maja Lilja in Örebro University deeply intervjued mothers, to study the reasoning around diversity, swedishness and house segregration.

-Many speaks about ethnic diversity as an enriching factor, but when you will move or choose a school to your kids the question becomes more concrete, and then you often choose some form of swedishness. They often express that they don't want the children to be a minority, or that they are carefull about their sweidsh language.

It is about that you want a "enough" swedish environment for the kids, so that you can grow up to be swedish middle class. They prioritise therefore in their actual choices an ethnically swedish and homogenous place, because they perceive as best for the kids. "Parents today seems to come into a segregatation problematic where many people try to avoid the segregations negative effect, by trying to avoid certain house areas and its schools", Maja Lilja writes in her doctoral.
