Like, how everything originally played for laughs eventually becomes horrifying and played straight... I love things that seem bright on the surface but are gloomy behind the veil

Unfortunately season 1... isn't very funny.... well minus the crack episode that one is hilarious
man i respect that opinion but the first episode cracked me up

idk maybe start at the start tho?

cause like setting up who 'orel' is as a charachter - he changes a lot after the season 2 finale you miss all the charachter development if you start at the part where it gets real dark.

but also i feel like a lot of people might dip out before the show gets REALLY good at the last third of the show idk
Season one turns a lot of ppl away from orel imo... I almost swore the show off forever cuz I hated it so much.

I didnt become a fan until I saw the episode alone after knowing something fishy was going on when I saw the promos.

I agree that season 1 provides a good background and really makes the drama run deeper, but it's honestly rough and so I typically reccomend ppl start with the season 2 finale, blaze through season 3, then watch seasons 1 and two if they liked season 3 to really get the most out of the show

yea that makes sense. but for me i liked it from the start and then i LOVED it at the last part. but i can fully understand why you'd recommend it this way.
See I first saw the Christmas special and loved it, couldn't wait for the season 1 premiere and well... I was like "I waited for a year for this bs?" If it weren't 4 alone I would of never gave it a chance

Many ppl I know saw a few episodes of season 1, hated it, and swore it off w/o knowing how good season  3 is. Seems season 1 isnt for a lot of ppl (I rarely revisit it myself) but some ppl enjoy it

So yeah that's why I reccomend watching orel in that order at first, but I agree watching the whole show makes 4 the most impact

Yeah the crack episode is the only season 1 episode I genuinely found funny

Season 2 is good tho, I really like stephanie's origin story

Numb fucked me up man

this episode and 'alone' those were the ones that were like total gut punches for me
Omg alone!

I still relate to nurse bendy... objectification is a big fear of mine

"I feel emotions... and I need people to know that." Its a disturbing yet compassionate and honest look at the sexual abuse of three women... it's my favorite episode

On a personal level nature part 2 really resonated.

"You're a bad person when you drink!"

I really relate to orel... I was raised Christian, had an abusive and alcoholic parent, and was naive and and trusting of authority... when you realized your parents are fucked up and that you were lied to, your whole world view shatters. Nothing is how it seems.

It's a shame they cancelled the series early... I wanted to see the development of arthur... also orel was supposed to become an agnostic goth kid, which is funny cuz that happened to me when I was his age

Srry 4 going on I rarely meet fans of this underrated show

Ugh omg ♡ yeah that's one of my favorite scenes

I love bojack horseman... but it has nothing on this show... I credit this show w/ the popularity of adult animated dramedies... it was one of the first I think?

yea this was a cult show even while it was airing and im legit bout to do a rewatch because of this thread lol.

i needed a show that satirized religion like this one did when this show first aired. gw was in office and everyone around me seemed so stupid.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWvMjiAUJqs 'god and facts dont mix' and hes angry at FACTS lol like i love that and i needed it.

i think youre right that this is one of the first cartoons to GO there. and i dont know that any cartoon has quite gone to the same places- like that girl had a bloody hanger in that episode it doesnt get darker than that.

Its funny you mention gw...  I watched a video essay that pointed out how the humor is a reflection of the Bush era... never thought of it like that but it's TRUE

I really needed season 3 when it came out... I was deconverting to agnosticism and coming to terms with my moms abusive and alcoholic behavior... it was my outlet

I've seen people opine that the show displays a superior attitude towards christians...  but I always thought it was a critique of people who use religion to breed fear and ignorance, abuse their power, or hide their problems rather than of religion itself

I'm pretty sure Moral Orel paved the way for shows like bojack, final space and ricky & morty... it was ahead of its time

Glad to inspire you to rewatch it, currently streaming it on hulu lol

Ok so I'm rewatching season 1 rn and I'm laughing

I actually think the comedy hits harder when you've seen the drama episodes tbh

The one where he impregnates women w/ his sperm sobhe doesnt sin by masturbating.... haha it's a brilliant satire of how lying to our youth about sex creates problems

"Do you want a jeez-it?"

"No thanks Reverend."

"Its catholic free!"

"Oh. Ok!"
