It's possible ur roomie was just a hoarder but a lot of tweakers hoard shit they've stolen or ravaged out of dumpsters. Or at least the montanan tweakers I know do.

brian had weird walkers and canes he found, well over 30 broken or "almost working" TVs in the two sheds, constantly bringing more home to fix (he never fixed a single one)
but we also dumpster dived together bc thats just a thing I do sometimes so idk

dude when I had to leave town to get my mom committed, I came back and my bathroom sink was in the tub and he'd completely torn out the floor and shit and was "redoing" the bathroom
in the house that I rent.

tbh the story he gave me at the time seemed really plausible, he said he was trying to put a shelf under the sink, broke a water line, went under the house and fixed the water line, but the floor was soaked and ruined so he was gonna put some tiles down, but found that the subfloor had mold, so he replaced the sub floor - so on and so forth. This is an old, shoddily built house - so it all seemed really plausible.
It ended up better in the end, but I had to fucking continue to PUSH him to put my bathroom back together.

I could write an essay on the amount of bs mitchell hoarded. It was ridiculous. He basically trashed two rooms in his dads place. His poor dad. 

Obviously hoarding isnt only a tweaker thing. Lots of factors can cause that.  You're definitely not in the wrong for wondering tho.

I live in montana. HBO released a documentary in 04 called montana meth, its trippy cuz I'm from kalispell and they filmed there. I didnt know any of the ppl in the doc but the blue and white motel... I know plenty of ppl who have smoked meth in there w/ the owner... my mom included lol

Some ppl who have used for years can manage to act really functional, especially if they've built a tolerance 

Happened to my ex- bf, it was the flaky shit he pulled and his hoarder room that made it obvious. Otherwise you couldn't tell
