me, working at a recycling center: this makes my blood boil 
I worked in one through college and it was so heartbreaking. 
I even did my senior project on it.

Glass recycling is sporadic.  It depends on the town, MOST towns do not take it, and those that do only recycle it when someone is willing to buy it.
Cans are always recycled because the metal recycling is not outsourced to china.
Plastic is almost never recycled since China has stopped taking our recycling.

Paper and cardboard can be recycled, but where I live they can't be recycled in daily pick ups (they will throw it in your yard) and you have to go find someone who can recycle it for you, which most folks can't or wont do. (I burn all my paper and cardboard)
