a different neighbor of mine makes water kefir and bottles it for all of us.
all my neighbors grow different things, preserve different things, make different things, and we all share and help each other lol

i've never accomplished mayo but to be fair i'm vegan so there's no eggs.

i like fermentation etc! i've done garlic, and kombucha, and right now i'm working on tofu fermented in miso which is apparently a very little known practice from fukuoka i think? or another town in japan. i wanna do more stuff i'm just super lazy which is a funny thing to say about fermentation.
I got super into fermentation the past few summers, I've done cucumbers, radishes, carrots, sauerkraut, ginger bug soda, tepache, kohlrabi, zucchini relish, cucumber relish, onions, honey garlic
etc

but honestly? I feel like I make the veg, and they sit in my fridge - except the cucumbers, I eat no fewer than 8 gallons of fermented pickles every summer....

and the cool thing about fermentation is you just CAN be lazy about it lolol
I bought some airlocks I can put on old pickle jars so I can be even lazier this summer
my kitchen is just so small and I run out of space a lot
yeah thats the thing is i wanna do stuff i know i'll use or if i give it to people they'll use. and that's hard i guess. if ginger bug soda is just like a fermented ginger drink/ginger beer that sounds delicious. i watched a video on homemade ginger beer and i'd love to do that.

yeah that's what i mean by it's kinda ridiculous cause you just prep it and then essentially it just sits there but my adhd is like.... sorry you will never start a project.

I do it because I grow a ton of food, and get a CSA, and this summer and last, I've got food stamps because of covid - so I'm trying all kinds of ways to preserve foods for hard times...

god i love that kind of sense of community this is why i wanna live in a hick town. i'm not sure if that's exactly your neighborhood but from everything i've heard of it that's how i'm describing it.
like i don't even know the names of most of the people who live in my apartnment building and there's a woman who gives me the stink eye when i walk in to the building while she's outside having a smoke which is like always. i just wanna be able to share food with neighbors!!

smart. i grew veggies last summer but moved to an appt with no patio or balcony or yard. sad cause being outside in the backyard is like one of my favourite activities and my partner had just spent like $1000 on patio furniture for me right before we moved.

I mean, I don't know all my neighbors, and I don't get along with all the ones I do know, but we look out for each other. We even got fruit trees planted on the sidewalks for the whole neighborhood to share.

Introducing yourself and just generally being personable goes a long way, for sure.
I posted here a lot about some sketchy new neighbors, but they turned out to be pretty alright folks once I actually went over to talk to them - they're a bit rough around the edges (recovering addicts) but ultimately pretty cool. And even if you don't make friends with your neighbors, there's a sense of security in just knowing who they are.

Honestly, it all started when my friend Danielle started a facebook group for the whole neighborhood, and then she passed it over to me when she moved.  I'd like to actually go out with door hangers to try and reach the neighbors who haven't found it yet.

Are there community garden plot rentals where you live? Lots of towns have pieces of land you can grow food on for very very cheap, or even just community gardens where everyone works on the same plot. If there isn't, there may be an agricultural nonprofit that would be interested in trying to start one.

the closest one to me looks dilapidated as hell and i don't think anyone's actually using it and it's right on a busy street so i wouldn't find it meditative like i usually do. however i guess it is better than nothing and maybe if i start it back up again it could turn into something nice.

i think it also is a different experience if you live in a house vs an apartment. at my old house we got to know the neighbors on either side of us and they were all great, i think people just get weirdly territorial when you share space? i'm not sure.

facebook community groups are great, you should definitely do that, at my old place we got a letter in the mail very similar to what you wanna do.

It'd be so rewarding to bring it back to life
