One time I was in Jerusalem in a very religious neighbourhood and I had to get out (long story on how I got there, don't worry about it, I'll just say it was yarn related) so I got on a bus and. How do I explain this? Buses in Israel, and specifically in Jerusalem, are very segregated. By choice, that is. Haredim usually stick to their own busses, mostly because they scare everyone else away oof. It's not a law, obviously, this isn't some kind of theocracy (sort of. Yikes.), it's just the way things are. In certain places the women will sit in the back of the bus. I guess they choose to? But also personal choice and freedom isn't really a thing in those communities. But they still wouldn't want to sit next to a man so yeah, it's their choice. It's illegal to harass people for where they choose to sit so it's not like anyone's explicitly telling them where to sit, it's more of an unwritten role. Anyway, I got on the bus and people stared at me and not one was wearing masks except for me so that was a yikes. Also a little girl right next to me pointed at me and was like "look dad" to her father and he looked at me disapprovingly and said something along the lines of "I can see". Like. Bruh. No apology, nothing. Ass. Thank you for coming to my ted talk.
