I had to buy it myself, usually. 
I had a little job as a file clerk on school-breaks. 
The rest was gifts, hot topic gift cards were the birthday present of choice until high school lol

I remember in 5th grade when I started dipping my toes in the waters of being a weird alt kid some gal kept calling me a poser cuz I couldn't afford tripp pants, or hot topic at all, and my mom and I would make goth clothes outta regular clothes + iron on patches, and we'd make my jewelry out of like, actual junk in the garage like bike chains haha

Looking back, as much as mom sucked, that was sweet as fuck
