i felt that way a bit at one point too but i think a really good point to remember is that. Covid is actually disproportionately killing black people (and non white ppl)(i dont know if that is true wherever u are but i know it is true here in the uk and in a lot of places). so it is the ppl who are were basically already dying the most primarily going out and protesting. black people and non white people were ALREADY on the frontlines during the entirety of the crisis, in low paid positions 'essential worker' roles such as supermarket workers, nurses, taxi drivers, etc. most black ppl and ethnic minorities havent been able to stay at home and practice social distancing at any point during this pandemic because they were forced to go to work. and thats why they have been dying in disproportionate numbers already. sooooooo if they were already being forced to work in unsafe conditions during the pandemic while middle class white ppl were able to 'work from home' and practice social distancing then the might as well go and protest as well. its their own ppl who hav been dying the most anyway. which links in of course with structural and systemic racism in and of itself.Ā
i saw a post about this a while back but it was angled more negatively being about like how it's bad that white people are going to the protests and spreading covid and then they can just go home and be cushy and not die while black people keep dying or something.
yeah. thats a good point tbh. im conflicted and personally i have stayed away from the protests in london bcuz i am still worried abt covid, if i lived alone maybe id feel differently but i live w my parents. im not gonna criticise any1 else for attending though especially since literally almost every1 has been wearing masks. i just rly hav an issue w ppl being like 'omg why are they protesting what about covid' when those same ppl were nowhere near as loud about keeping ppl safe by not forcing them to go to work. here, theres a lot of more like right wing ppl basically getting angry abt the protests while simultaneously being like 'lets get the economy restarted and send everyone back to work!' after theyve spent the entirety of the crisis at home relying on non white people to keep working. and also theyre keeping quiet about the beaches that have literally have been PACKED. its just like ??? idk its complicated. ive just seen ppl who are mostly racists or hav questionable opinions being very vocal abt covid spreading at the protests and not being vocal about protecting ppl generally so obv it seems like an argument that is used when ppl want to paint the protesters in a negative light
