it's a pit. basically the eye didn't finish forming properly in the womb. some people have really big vision issues as a result but i'm pretty lucky because mine is small and mostly centred, so I only have a small reduction in my field of vision (a blind spot, basically) in my right eye. It's pretty closely linked to retinal detachment, but because optic disc pits are extremely rare, no one knows exactly how closely linked they actually are
