my childhood best friend has had them for a long time due to a birth defect, if not his entire life.
trust me there's nothing embarassing about it, it can be a huge help and you might even hear things you've never heard before!!
also depending on where you live, there are clubs, summer camps etc for deaf/hard of hearing people and you can hang out with them and make new friends like that!!
