i get that, that's literally the point of my post, that like
the ambiguity around what they are saying vs. what they mean is unsettling because:
1. it's hard to trust your own instincts re: that person or those statements
2. that person can potentially 'get away' with suggesting really nasty things, because their language is too ambiguous to effectively call them out on it
