drinking for the taste, having wine with a meal etc is a different thing imo but if you're drinking alcohol with the goal of getting drunk, why is that not as bad as doing drugs? apart from it being legal/illegal, what's the difference?

I'm from a village with tons of alcoholics, believe me alcohol can fuck you up, it kills your brain cells, takes away the control of your limbs, kills your liver, affects your heart, it's a toxic substance that damages your neural system. 

A guy who lives in my parents house is an alcoholic, he has to hold the bottle with both hands to drink because his limbs are so fucked up and he doesn't feel most of his legs, he is only 50 but the distance from the car to the front door makes him sweat. 
He fell on the sidewalk, me and my sister had to pick him up and clean up the blood and he can't remember our names
He is at the hospital at least 3 months a year, special clinics trying to fix the nerve damage
He has been to rehab like 15 times but comes back the same 
He hasn't worked in 10 years and gets social support from the state because he can't work anymore
