thriller
i just discovered this series via a recommendation and it has blown my mind away! it's a chinese psychological thriller involving a man who murders his own inlaws (not a spoiler, this happens in the first scene), and 2 children capture the incident. they then decide to blackmail him.
but that's not really the reason why this show is a breakout success in china (it's one of the highest rated chinese shows and has become a cultural phenomenon).
the bad kids' success is in part due to the heavy focus on child psychology, the show has sparked debate on the perceptiveness and malleability of children, and the impact that upbringing, environment etc. has on a child's development. china is conservative when it comes to perceiving children (ignorant and unknowing, reliant on the guidance of adults). this show has challenged that notion and touches on subjects such as (emotional) abuse, neglect, subjects that chinese people really don't like to talk about.
i think the series is in a similar vein as psychological thrillers such as the kdrama 'strangers in hell' and the american show 'hannibal'. it is character focused and tense all-through. definitely recommend it if you are looking for a foreign-language drama!
