today marks the 75 year 'anniversary' since the day america dropped a nuke on hiroshima.

whether this action was justified has been debated many times over the years. what do you guys think? do you think it was a necessary evil?

the hiroshima and nagasaki bombing has conventionally been regarded as THE event that led to the japanese's surrender. however, modern interpretations suggest that these events played only a part, some would even say marginal part, to the decision of surrendering.

in fact, this article suggests that it was not the nukes, but the soviets that was the decisive influence.

interesting to think about

and if we consider further consequences, we might even make the assumption that the use of the atomic bombs kickstarted the cold war, (re this article). leading to a head to head race between the us and the soviet union that had the world in its grips for decades

It's sad that there wasn't a better way especially with it aiding in starting the Cold War w/ Russia.
Though it could be justifiable considering Japan could've distracted the US from Nazi Germany.
Idk.

wasn't the war pretty much over already? and no, killing hundreds of thousand of innocent people is not a necessary evil, in no way can it ever be justified

but if america didn't drop the bombs, then japan would not have surrended and millions more would have died, what do you think of that?

the way i understood it japan wouldn't have been able to keep it going for much longer anyway? and there had to have been another solution than to pretty much burn what, 200k sivilians ?
