Poll: How many languages do you speak?
Ppl who are learning languages!!

I need some advice! I want to try and pick up on my Dutch again... I've been learning it on and off for about 1,5 years but I never really get anywhere with it.

Right now I'm using the Duolingo app and a textbook I got online; but I'm really struggling with getting the grammar down and speaking the language since I'm doing it by myself.

If someone's been learning a language alone, and actually excelled, please share your tips and tricks! Obviously consistency is a big one hehe.. So I'll try to get that down, but if there are any good websites, youtube videos (or literally anything else) that helps with learning, hit me up! Preferably stuff that's free, since I don't know how long I'll keep this up lmao

i speak dutch so u can always ask me

the only tip i have is that duolingo is pretty inefficient and i recommend using a college-level coursebook, i am doing the same with japanese. i think duolingo is great for learning simple sentences but for the more important parts (grammar, comprehension, writing, listening) duolingo is absolutely useless

i recommend also going to https://www.reddit.com/r/learndutch/ because they always share good resources and you can ask if you have a question

Thank you, I'll check it out!

Yeah, after a while duolingo became pretty useless except for learning random words (the initial reason why I bough a sorta cheap text book)

i can understand ppl speaking 5 languages decently, but i am very skeptical of 'polyglots' who claim they're fluent in 7 or more languages.... like obtaining mastery in a language takes years and u want to convince me u speak 7 languages at 30

I think seven still reasonable though, and it completely depends on how you've learned the languages.

fluently? i very much doubt it, unless they count dialects as a separate language
