Gender and gender roles?
Capitaine

I had a Zoom mething with my Thesis lecturer and basically he wasn't enthousiastic at all and I felt like he criticized pretty much everything I said. So after I closed my laptop I had a massive mental breakdown and decided that I was completely done with my original idea. I'm now thinking about analyzing the representation of gender and gender roles in The Witcher series. I was wondering if perhaps anyone on her has some great academic writings on gender and gender roles? Thanks!

I mean just check the basic literature , I would include some theory about identity in general as well as feminist literature and ofc some semiotics basics

I definitely will. I was just wondering if anyone has any recommendations when it comes to writers or specific articles!

Unless you want material related to gender in a linguistic sense, either sociolinguistically related or grammatical gender,  I have nothing.

I had to look up pretty much all of that because I had no idea what you were talking about hahaha, but I'm absolutely unsure wether or not I can use that for a film analysis haha

Hmmm off the top of my head
Lotman, Simone de beauvoir, Judith butler, Foucault, Umberto eco, Roman jakobson, dudley Andrew, Barbara creed (she might be especially interesting for you), Annette Kuhn,...

But for specific papers and books I have to look it up

Omg thank you so much! To have a few writers is already amazing!

They are parts of very different disciplines tho but we covered them in my introduction to media analysis lecture, basically different approaches

tbh i'm kinda confused does thesis mean something else in europe than it does here? like you wouldn't pick a topic you haven't studied yet for a thesis here- you would already have some idea of what materials to use.

It's like your final "paper" for your Bachelor. For us you just need to be interested in it and research the shit out of everything haha. We've discussed gender and gender roles in class before, but not into great detail. I've written papers on masculinity, so I know a few basic things. I just need a whole lot more if I want to be able to write a 10.000 word thesis about it.

As far as I know you pick a topic that is of interest to you (or your counceler/advisor assigns you one) and then you do research
Ofc the topic is in the context of your degree so you should have an overview over the basic theories and people behind them in the discipline of your studies but yeah, the process of researching is a big part of a bachelor's /master's thesis

I've literally died multiple times the past two weeks because we had to do so much research hahaha, it was ridiculous. We had to read 8 articles and 2 books in about 5 days. On top of that we had to write a summary on each of them, and think and write critically about the argument structure, the methodology, the use of sources, the research question and so on. I ended up handing in a 4000 word document for an assignment which isn't even going to be graded HAHA

Feel ya, I had a 24h essay this Wednesday (bc Corona no exams cry) and read 90 pages of 3 different books + the 15 page journal entry that was the base of the central question of the essay. I only wrote 1500 words but my eyes hurt a lot after those 24hrs
