conformity - in simple terms: changing your behaviour and going along with the group

we got 3 types of ways people conform:

- compliance:
-> this is the lowest level of conformity as it is only a temporary change
-> it's where we outwardly (publicly) go along with the group/majority view but privately disagree with it

example: listening to the same music as your friends and pretending to like it (publicly) but actually you don't like it

-  identification:
-> this is the middle level of conformity
-> we conform to the opinions of the group because there is something about the group that we value but we don't agree with everything the group stands for

example: social roles such as teachers, they go along with school rules because they value their job but may not agree with every school rule

- internalisation:
-> this is the deepest level of conformity
-> we conform to the majority view because we believe it to be true
-> the individual exhibits a permanent change in behaviour and attitudes both privately and publicly

example: becoming a vegetarian for ethical reasons, you stop eating meat and gather a "meat is murder" attitude
