One of my friends has gotten a guinea pig around two-three months ago, and yesterday my boyfriend and I came for a dinner.
It's my friends girlfriends guinea pig, but what really hit me was its' condition. The poor little one lived in a cage meant for hamsters, too small. It was extremely skinny to the point where I could feel and could spots its' bones on the legs. I kindly asked him when it was last fed and what they fed it, and he kinda shrugged and told me that his partner was the one taking care of him mostly and that he only got a carrot most days and pellets every third to fourth day.
The entire cage stank of ammonia and piss. I seriously do not think it has been cleaned since they got the little fella. Its' fur was very mat, and the nails was in a dire need of a trim.
I tried to say that guinea pigs needs to be fed regularly, fresh hay and water, along with a variety of greens for them to maintain a healthy life style. He didnt really seem to care, but came with the same "it's my gfs, he works a lot, so sometimes she's too tired" etc etc.
Now I don't know what to do. Im considering calling my friend again, and try to talk with him, offer them that if it's too much work that I can take the little one in and perhaps provide better care. I just feel like they would be vert insulted? I know it sucks having to say goodbye, but on the same time i cannot ignore those big signs of neglect. My friend who in the first place didnt want the guinea pig has asked me a few times if i could babysit him for two weeks, because they both had work. I wasn't able to at that time since I work myself and it's hard to socialize it and make it feel safe.
I tried to talk with him about its' needs. I told him that he was living in horrid conditions and was starving. I even gave the little guy food yesterday - and he ate the entire bowl up so quickly.
What would you do?
