they use kcal because it's the smaller unit. You'd have more deciamal numbers for the kjul and that would confuse too many people (like anyone even knows what kcal truly is anyways...)

you do realise that they both originate from roughly the same time
we would know joules as well as calories if we started to use that one instead
it's not that calories is more intuitive, it's like meters and feet/miles. both are correct and both indicate the same thing, but some use one unit of measurement, others the other and none is wrong to use
like, I don't get why you obsess about it so much, it literally does not matter at all in the least
