I've discussed these kinds of things with especially one friend and we have reached the conclusion that it is very much about your moral beliefs when it comes to animals. I don't find it sad either, I really don't. What I do find sad is humans applying human emotions to animals, thinking that whatever values and beliefs we have can appropriately be applied on other species.

I don't think it's sad, it's natural imo. 

I think it's more sad when humans cause harm to animals that we have no reason to cause harm too (talking about the rainforest and animals like elephants and rhinos getting their horns cut off)
