yh I know... another thread on autism lol... i don't wanna cause arguments or start a debate. BUT today I got an autism diagnosis. Explains a lot. So I was wondering, who else here is on the spectrum and can you tell me of any good resources or maybe things i should know as someone newly diagnosed? Also tell me about your journey with getting diagnosed if you feel comfortable doing so

ion think theres much to say really honestly

could be a nice idea to at least casually observe online communities tho u can pic up a lot of useful stuff from them even if u cant b bothered to participate in any social way. tumblr has a large one but its....tumblr. u win some u lose some

I want mine removed as I've worked a lot with my issues. Used to be really insecure and shy, something I'm not anymore in real life.Ā

I remember when I got my diagnosis I was relieved because it was some sort of explanation as to why I wasn't like everyone else. I hope that's what you feel too!

these are some stuff i've picked up along the way that are of good help!!

- having a calendar to put up all the dates
- making sure to not put 2 much pressure on urself with basically overbooking urself, make sure meetings / appointments are evenly spread out
- if problems with food smells and not being able to eat from the same fridge as the rest of the people u live with: get ur own fridge (!!!) this has helped me so much with reducing the anxiety / overload i experience
- make sure u have comfy clothes that feel good on u, it will be much easier
- have reminders of basic stuff if u struggle with such, can be eating, brushing ur teeth, shower n what not
- plan ur activities !
- but also plan ur rest! sometimes we get caught up with having to complete something that we forget to take a break, a break can make u gain some energy again and this will be a thing u have to learn for urself!
- tell people how u function and how for them to make it easier for u, there will be less stress from ur side and people will have a better understanding of u, if ur not confident enough to tell people u can always make sure the person closest to u can bring ur msg to them
- accept that there will be frustration, this isn't easy when u feel everything has failed because it didn't go to plan, instead think that there's a day tomorrow and reflect over what went wrong
- don't hold back, masking is sometimes needed as i use it myself to not cause any evil stares, but don't compromise urself to fit a mould, be yourself and learn to accept that you are just like any other person
- let people take charge of the planning every now and then! even though i like having my own plans, sometimes i don't know my own limits and i want too much that i'm just not mentally capable of

Did you seek a diagnosis? In my case a teacher referred me to the school psychologist and that's how I got diagnosed.Ā

My biggest tip is be selective of whom you tell, found a lot of ppl just stereotype me or doubt the accuracy of the diagnosis (tho so have I).Ā

Really reccomend Tony Attwood's work

I feel like there's a huge chunk of people on vp that are neurodivergent, avatar forum sites seem to attract autistic folks haha

Realized I was probably autistic from literally just tumblr posts. It's unfortunate that the less obvious traits are really not well known so everyone has just a very one dimentional view of how autistic people look. Most of us learn to mask very early in life and think that "well i'm just a little weird and awkward it's no big deal" when in reality masking and trying to blend in creates huge amounts of unnecessary stress for us

this might not happen to you but it did to me; I started to act "more autistic" when I realized I was neurodivergent. I just started stimming more because I stopped holding my instincts back, I stopped worrying about enjoying things or being weird or emotional and I just feel more like myself now? And I still keep noticing little things that most likely stem from me being neurotypical, just in my daily life and past as well
It can be weird at the start bcs youve learned to live and act a certain way but honestly it's a relief to know yourself better

i agree with anachronism, tony attwood is cool. i also read a selfbiography by a psychologist called "my autistic awakening", written by a woman (dont remember her name). she has also worked closely with tony attwood. apart from that i think it's very personal what you feel works and what doesnt when seeking out help and resources. ive found the most helpful resources on tumblr. apart from that i think my biggest tip would be to be patient and give it time to settle. for me it was very uprooting to get an autism diagnosis, as it first explained a lot, but then also caused me to doubt my entire reality. so yeah... maybe seek out help from an autism specialised psychologist, who can give you some information on autism. i got that, when i first got diagnosed, and it was very helpful

the official numbers of about 1 on 50 ppl estimated to be autistic adds up to at least 4 autistics being online at once, add to that socialising is far easier online than in person for a lot of autistic ppl making us all flock to social sites like this like were getting paid, small pixel clothing cute brain go YEA

also the sheer amount of dumb shit people say and do on here its hard to feel like ur being judged for being slightly off key i think it adds up
