I fell on my head a little over ten years ago, and didn't get medical attention (bc poor and no insurance) so now this happens a few times a year. 
I've had x-rays as an adult, they've seen abnormalities in my lower spine but nothing near my neck.
but something is UP with this muscle. 
Sometimes if I turn my head too fast looking behind me to back my car up, I'm fucked.

I mean no one can know for sure, but it's pretty likely, it's the same muscle that was inflamed when I fell.

Idk if u ever done ice or heat on it, but i remember putting heat on and it kind of help on the pain for a bit
