How do I outline an argument?
Account deleted

I have to outline an argument for my essay? Like I have read a critical essay that I'm going to discuss but I need to outline the argument for it, and I have no idea how to do it. Do I just write down the main argument and the the point that support it and the conclusion or what?

yeah if i was asked to outline my argument it would probably look like this

Opening Paragraph / Thesis
Body Paragraph 1 (First point)
Body Paragraph 2 (Second point)
Body Paragraph 3 (Third Point)
Closing argument

Depending on your school level and writing level, you could also do argument / counter argument, argument / counter argument in order to strengthen your essay.  Are you getting graded on your outline?

I am trying to wrap my head around stuff.

Like the thing is that I'm not writing a persuative essay. I have read one and I need to outline that essay to use in my own essay

does that make sense

what is your topic/thesis?

that makes sense though because if you're not writing a persuasive essay it could be confusing but you gotta have a thesis no matter what for ur argument.  like even if you're doing an analysis or something

Discuss whether you find the essay persuasive in relation to WutheringHeights, giving reasons for your point of views. E.g. point out limitations of it.

this is basically the part where I have to take a stance but I haven't gotten to it yet. I'm just working on writing about what i'm going to discuss atm

ya basically what i would say is decide wether or not the essay is persuasive or not, like do you agree with the essay YES/NO?

and if you do agree with the essay, pick out like 3 points why you agree
and if you don't, pick out 3 points where they fail

or you can do a mix of it, you can be like well they succeed in some areas but fail in others

ok also nesta i really think you should try to take a writing class next semester. like idk who your academic advisor is but they shouldnt be putting you in so many classes where you need to write essays without having you take a class on HOW to write essays first? i think if you can get into an entry level writing class it will benefit you for the rest of your time in college in almost every class probably and also likely in your future career. i know this advice isnt useful in this moment but i think its important. you're actually a good writer once you figure out how to structure what you're writing you just need a class on how to structure your writing.
