My grandma told me that when she was a kid she heard that the nazists took pliers  and pulled the nails off from the fingers. My grandma got so scared so she hid under the kitchen table and started to eat on her nails so the nazists wouldn't be able to rip them with pliers. She still bites her nails to this day.
