(jowl bacon is bacon cut from the cheek of a pig instead of the stomach)

its really fatty and it doesn't taste like it's been cured, like, theres no salt...
I think I'm gonna salt and cook the rest on a rack in the oven to try and get it crispy.

Tell me about the last time you bought a food you'd never tried before

I get food stamps because I'm unemployed (lost my work due to covid)
and I'm a really frugal shopper, I don't buy many pre packaged foods (I don't like them) so the money they give me goes...really far, and so I use it to try weird stuff from the farmers market.

I've learned I can make myself like most things if I cook them right - but this was my first time buying weird meat, I usually buy different vegetables or mushrooms I haven't tried...

They make it really hard to get and keep them lol, but shit, my taxes pay for them, that's what they're there for - to help me.

I have a really steady routine with chicken - I buy a whole chicken (sometimes every week, sometimes bi-weekly), I debone it, make bone broth from the carcass, and I fry up the rest of the chicken in cubes and use it throughout the week. I haven't done it in a while because the grocery store had really good sales on pork so I have a lot of pork in the freezer right now and no room for a chicken.
