(venting thread) this is WACK and stressful

I'm like 90% sure I've been misdiagnosed and medicated incorrectly by my psych who was so eager to diagnose me within...40 minutes of meeting me.

and now I can't really confront her til my appt Monday but I can't get off my mind that her hasty decision didn't allow me to really get into any detail at all. She just checked boxes and gave me meds, all in less than an hour.

she's also given me several pieces of information that I have been able to easily disprove, so she's either got outdated info, or is blatantly lying to me. Like lack of interactions with my other meds, statistics about bipolar heredity, things I was experiencing not being medication side effects, that I couldn't possibly have adhd because there's "no emotional component" and it "doesn't have episodes" - all things I was able to disprove pretty easily... Like, I couldn't even find the information she provided me when I searched specifically for it.

but of course because I've got this severe (potentially incorrect) diagnosis, of course my concerns will just be chalked up to being crazy and distrusting and unwilling to "accept" the diagnosis.

What the fuck, did you get diagnosis after just 40 min aka one appointment? It's potentionally harmful for your brain to be put on wrong meds, esp if it's meds for bipolar. What a shitty, whack job they've done. It def should be many appointments to be sure to give right diagnosis???

There's so many other things which have similar symptoms, and def should use time to find out.

Like I know in the US they have to give some kind of diagnosis to satisfy insurance, but it didn't have to be bipolar it coulda been like, anxiety, depression, mood disorder, and they coulda kept seeing me?
I also didn't need to be on meds right away?

All my friends (even those who WORK IN MENTAL HEALTH) are like "what the fuck? you're neurotic but not manic..."

That's kinda the plan
my therapist wants me to make a list of questions for my appt Monday since its already scheduled and if I'm unsatisfied with how she answers them or if I feel dismissed or rushed again, she's gonna help me find another psych (well this clinic calls them "prescribers" they're psychiatric nurse practitioners)

I just get so worn down and defeated from days and days of anxiety and neurotic behavior, that by the time these appointments come up I don't have the energy to stand up for myself anymore

Ok I think even if she answers to a semi satisfactory degree, she still doesn't sound good so I would just switch either way after the appointment, no matter how it goes that time 🤔 hm

my therapist said she's never worked with a prescriber who diagnose bipolar so fast, that there's a lot to rule out before giving such a big diagnosis...

yeah that's what I was telling my grandma this morning
that like, I'm willing to do what my therapist has suggested but my mind is pretty made up that I don't like this dr...

like this woman straight up lied to me about the way my meds interact with birth control - like gave me the complete polar opposite of the truth
she also said there's a 50% chance of inheriting bipolar if one parent has it, and the actual statistic is 10%...
and when my new meds made me depressed and unable to control my moods she told me "that's not a side effect" and I was able to find its...absolutely a side effect, and one of the "contact your doctor immediately" side effects nonetheless

I didnt want to write it when you made a thread about you being bipolar but i take everything related to mental health diagnosis in us with grain of salt. Got family in us and heard many things about the fact that diagnosis being rushed and later on found out to be wrong. It seems too soon/sudden also? which is concerning since being diagnosed with bipolar is very serious and medication should not be given to other than ppl who has that diagnosis. It should be atleast many appointments to find out, and if diagnosis should be made early on depression or/and anxiety are better options.
It's important to get right treatment and honestly to give medication after just one appointment for bipolar is very unprofessional. Find a new therapist.

I was so beat down from the weeks leading up to that appointment that I just accepted it, defeated.
but I feel like my head is clearer now and I really really feel like it isn't right...
my mom is bipolar 1, and she spent $17,000 during her last manic episode and was so delusional ended up being hospitalized by the police twice.
I'm not even close to that off my rocker, yet got the exact same diagnosis.

I just have to figure out how to take the right steps and get a correct diagnosis.

Yeah sounds like your therapist thought if it's in family you're likely to have it. If she thinks it's like bipolar 2 it def should be used much much more time on that, since it's a bit vague and many other things which have same symptoms. If you have a good relationship with therapist i think it's time to have a chat about this, but honestly it's questionable when they just... dropped a diagnosis like that in 40 min.

bipolar 2 would be a little easier for me to accept, but she diagnosed me as bipolar 1, which does not resonate with me at all.

my therapist and the psyc are two different people.
I've been emailing with my therapist since last night about what to do.

shit thought it was bp 2 you got diagnosed with since it can relate to many other mental or neurodivergent disorders.
Odd to give you bp 1 if there's not really mania in the picture, my mom has bp1 and it shows etc. Since your mother has it it's obv that you know how it is and can tell if you have those symptoms or not.
