I'm grateful that my best friend started AA and it's worked for him - but I can totally see why people not only hate AA, but can't stand folks who use it, lol.

SMART Recovery is another option
and my friend who used to work in a rehab said even her alcoholic patients often preferred NA to AA

I mean there are parts in the AA literature that address nonreligious folks and how to interpret the text but as someone who lives in the bible belt, I can see how any religious talk can be incredibly triggering for some folks
I have a friend who had her PTSD triggered by AA because her family literally performed exorcisms on her as a child
but on the other side of the coin, a lot of alcoholics use the religious aspect of AA s a convenient excuse to avoid it - but to me, that's all the more reason to remove it from the curriculum

Its not even just the god thing lol it's the belief ur powerless and the complete lack of evidence

Nothing like telling a 21 year old they have to go because they got carried away got a dui and arent even an alcoholic and now they're told they're powerless

If it works cool

Hate ppl who act like it's the ultimate or only way tho

I definitely am torn on the "powerless" aspect of it
cuz some folks definitely are
but lots of folks aren't

I also think recovery programs without therapy and psychiatric evaluations are a waste of time because they can help you stay on the wagon, but not address and repair what led you to substance abuse in the first place

my best friend is 11 months sober today and in AA and I'm so proud of him
but I definitely want to push him to go to therapy as well because he's just coasting on sobriety and not addressing the things that sent him to addiction in the first place
