it doesn't go fully invisible because light gets refracted towards the moon by earth's atmosphere. n the reason it turns red is because red has the longest wavelength, so it scatters the least, so that's what makes it to the moon while other wavelengths get scattered out by the atmosphere. if the earth didn't have an atmosphere the moon would turn black during a lunar eclipse : )
