Can i ask them to pay?

Basically. Some time ago my friends (or just one of them actually) drunkenly decided to play "dj" on my record player. So the pick-up broke. It couldn't be fixed, so I bought a new one recently.

It's around 4 months ago, but can I ask the person to pay for it now? He did offer to pay for the repair, however when it couldn't be repaired I obviously didn't ask him to pay for the repair.

It cost around 1700,- dk roughly 247 dollars.

SINCE he is a student, I of course wouldnt expect him to pay me straight, but be open for like a "you pay this per. month"

or is it too long ago???

I Mean he did break it.. he should at least give you some money for it

Discuss it with him. But I think he should pay, or put some money towards your new one

I'm just not sure. It happened some time ago, and I've been saving up for a new one.
I did tell it could not be repaired.  But is it fair of me? Like if it was just a player to around 300,- dk i'd let it go, but he broke a very expensive one.

I def. will. I'm thinking of next week, since he's in the middle of an exam and I don't want to add another layer of pressure.

if u got a completely new one, and the other one wasn't that new, i think he shouldn't have to pay all, and if you got a better one than before, he shouldn't have to pay everything either, but maybe like 80% of it or something sounds reasonable to me

I had the previous one for 6 months, but it was in a mint condition.
But thanks for the input! I'd def think it would me more fair.

I live on my own. I have rent and I need to pay my bills and for groceries lol. 1700,- is A LOT for me, and If i chose to buy it when it broke, I wouldnt be able to afford food n stuff for like a month lol.

I think it's okay for you to ask him for money now, ig you just changed you mind about him not paying? If the new one is more expensive than the previous one then you should just ask for the amount of money the last one costs but either way i think its fine. It would be weird if that had happened a few years ago but its not even haft of year so yeah go get your money

Okay, have my 2 cents. I think you should have discussed it right away. Even if you had no intention / not the means to instantly buy a new record player. I mean, he should've probably offered some kind of compensation, shown some initiative, but from what you've said, I think this hasn't happened?

Anyway, he's a student, but he still might have an insurance. Or his parents (depending on his age lol). I don't know what it's like where you live, but I would just have my insurance (third-party insurance) pay for the damage. Four months later might be a bit late to make a claim, though.

I would probably still ask. And you're right, it's definitely not fair of you to ask to replace it on your own bill. But honestly, if you never uttered a single word about it, I'd feel a bit weird to do it now. But, hey, that's just me. And like I said, he should've offered. It's just common decency imo.
