Anyway, he's a student, but he still might have an insurance. Or his parents (depending on his age lol). I don't know what it's like where you live, but I would just have my insurance (third-party insurance) pay for the damage. Four months later might be a bit late to make a claim, though.
I would probably still ask. And you're right, it's definitely not fair of you to ask to replace it on your own bill. But honestly, if you never uttered a single word about it, I'd feel a bit weird to do it now. But, hey, that's just me. And like I said, he should've offered. It's just common decency imo.
