so I got a CSA this year, which is basically you pre-pay for a season of produce from a farm - you pre-paying helps them pay for the cost of running the farm throughout the year, and then when the veggies come in, you just pick them up. I got mine for 26 weeks, it cost me $572, so $22 a week, and I get about 5 items a week.
And honestly? I think this farm is using their CSA members as a way to unload their seconds (lower quality produce that does not get put in retail). I've never had a problem eating ugly produce and seconds, but it has a shorter shelf-life, and at $572 I kinda expect better?
And like, I'm not someone who's got no idea what goes down on a farm, I went to college for agriculture, I managed packing houses, the stuff I get, at least 1-2 items a week, would never leave the packing house for retail where I've worked.

Okay but really the point of this post is
should I ask them for a job managing their packing house? LOL
how do I be like "your quality control is absolute SHIT, but you should hire ME to fix it"

you absolutely should. you've identified or noticed a problem as the consumer, you have ample experience, and going out and not just asking for a job but suggesting that they hire you to fix a problem would look really good.

lots of small farms don't keep a packing house manager, they just have someone who has a free hour that already works for them go and handle a task - and that leads to poor quality control, too many hands, too many different standards of quality.

I got beans that literally had 3 mexican bean beetle larvae on them - which is technically harmless, but if I didn't notice that and they went into my compost, then MY beans would have gotten a bean beetle infestation.

I THINK one of my  neighbors actually knows these farmers personally and I may go that route so as not to be offensive.
I KNOW farming is hard work, I KNOW there's a certain acceptable level of damage on produce, but from my point of view, with my education and experience, they've surpassed that.
It started with dirty greens in the spring, which happens, but it looked like they literally hadn't been washed  at all, which would not be in compliance with food safety codes.

Like, I'm only 7 weeks into my 26 week CSA and I'm already here researching other farms I could get one from next year instead lol

I wonder if anyone else with their CSA feels the same, or if I'm just overly judgmental because I consider myself a sort of expert.

i get the feeling you're not just being overly judgemental. i understand that sometimes seconds can be good produce that just doesn't look perfect and it sucks that all that doesn't hit the stores, but sometimes it's just not good enough to make someone pay for.
and it would be extremely convenient for them to give really bad produce to people who can't choose what they're getting.  $22 a week sounds like... a lot of money for 5 things, too.
if they want to continue being supported like this through the next year they need to really think about the fact that that an actual person who's put actual money into it is receiving the garbage produce.

It's not a full time position in most places, like, I could come in 15-20 hours a week and really flip that place around.
But only if they want to do better.

I've heard they struggle to find a local work force, but I'm not a field worker, I'm just not good at that kind of work.

I can't say for sure without looking at their facility, but I bet they'd only need me like, 15-20 hours a week.

ugh
my cherry tomatoes show signs of being refrigerated (like, a no brainer, you do NOT refrigerate tomatoes unless they've been cut!) and now they'll be bad in a day or two
