I know the answer is 'western countries don't want any more refugees, even if those are literally executed or abused as sex slaves if they continue to stay in their home countries' but it's still shocking how the government and big parts of western societies can be so fucking cruel.
I think it's because it would end in a bloodbath if foreign soldiers stayed put. It was done like this to prevent a much, much, much larger war zone where civilians would have been more at risk.
Sadly this was the outcome. Taliban have had controle over a large part of Afganistan before they managed to invade Kabul two days ago.
It's cruel, but I do still have some hope for the future. I think in this crisis countries will unite to try to help somehow, but it does carry risks of a potential third world war.
Why would it end in a bloodbath if they did what they did for the last 20 years. A controlled withdrawal that was planned with possible refugees in mind and a reduction of the bureaucratic process to apply would have been less of a bloodbath than what the afghansis have to face now.
