I'm kinda obsessed

I've basically been obsessed with Charlie Chaplin since I was a teenager, and as I've gotten older and learned about his vocal criticism of capitalism and the US in general, his refusal to become a citizen, and his eventual exile - it makes me love him more.

I love going back and re-watching the movies (the ones he wrote) with that context

there's a cool podcast called You Must Remember This, that probably has episodes on a lot of your subjects and may make it more interesting

fun fact: I was charlie chaplin for a halloween school dance when I was a teenager and they wouldn't put my costume pic in the yearbook because they said it looked "too much like hitler"

Chaplin did several talkie films.

I do enjoy silent movies but I have to be in the right frame of mind to be able to focus on them, I also have to pause them a lot and come back to them (it took me like a whole day to watch Metropolis)
I got to go to a silent film screening once where they had a live organist doing the music for Steamboat Bill Jr. and honestly THAT was a super cool experience.

I tend to like the history surrounding the movies more than the movies themselves tho

Film itself as a form of media was literally brand new,Ā Ā folks didn't know how to act on screen yet, they hadn't yet developed modern acting techniques, camera angles, editing. It was literally brand new.

Also because it was printed on super volatile materials, over 90% of silent films are lost forever, not to mention they didn't really try to preserve them, no one expected anyone in the future to care, they were pumped out for a profit, fast.
the silent movies we have today we have because they survived, not because they were goodĀ lol
lots were destroyed, they could have been amazing, we'll never know.Ā

Chaplin is a goddamn legend tho I don't think anything he ever did was bad. Especially what he wrote himself.Ā

I read this really great book called Behind The Mask of Innocence by Kevin Brownlow about social issues tackled in early silent films, it really made the whole subject more interesting to me.

that being said this is stuff I read about on my own, I never had to do it for school really.

okay but if there is only one silent movie you ever watch in your entire life, watch The Mystery of the Leaping Fish (1916)
it's only like 25 minutes long and it's so batshit I love it

it's about a drug addicted detective "Coke Ennyday" and it is exactly what it sounds like
