it's easy and sells. media is made to be as palatable and easily consumed as possible these days
true its bad, i wish there was a way for me to watch stuff i like without having to put up with horrible character writing (or writing in general), on one side you have things being dumbed down for well - people who are too dumb to properly digest what theyre consuming - and on the other side you have people who want complicated stories and characters but wont take anything that is remotely "problematic" which is also just straight up dumb because real life is "problematic" as fuck and if media is supposed to present real experiences then we cant just get rid of everything bad lol thats how you get all this shitty media
i think it's not so much that people are dumb, it's that they have become accustomed to the easy stories and have become lazy. ppl dont want stuff that requires thinking anymore bc when they watch netflix or whatever they want to unwind so they just want to watch something easy
and the fact that that is almost the only type of media produced it becomes an evil circle, bc the more "easy" media produced, the more people become used to it and want it and so it continues. to break the circle media producers would have to produce more challenging content with complex stories and prepare for the show/film/whatever to fail and they just dont want to do that. everything with capitalism is just an evil circle of shit producing more shit
thats very nicely said, it all just reminds me of how things change when companies like disney get their hands on things, they just abandon all nuance and show people the same shit theyve seen hundreds of times before because they know people eat it up
