I'd only ever block someone if they sent me a dick pic or literally stalked me or something.

12 years is a lot. And I'd say explaining things thoroughly - why you have arrived to this conclusion - and giving him time to react would be ok. Although if he starts raging like a toddler, I'd say that at that point it'd be OK to block them.
