what has been your big monster to defeat while you were learning english that has nothing to do with grammar rules?

i think mine has been above all, the difficulty of expressing myself without seeming stupid... the difference in humorous tone, the rules of formality, and above all the sarcasm/irony !!

they are more cultural things from my point of view (? but speaking spanish the change is very visible and still (after years of studying) it is difficult for me understand, for example, when a person is upset about something i have said or is being passive aggressive.

i know it sounds totally stupid but it is what it is hahahaha :')

idioms

after you get to a point where you understand most of it based on grammar and vocabulary, you get to a point where you're just left with the specific mysteries of said language and that's often either words that have multiple meanings or idioms. just phrases people who know the language understand and you're sitting there wondering how it works out. Like some of them are easy enough to decipher and even if you don't get the full scope of it, you know what it's about. But then adding the more obscure ones or kind of regional slang words and their definitions? It just feels like you have to learn a completely new language all over again.

the dialects, yes! idk if it will be said like that in english too hahaha you're absolutely right!!

it's a bit crazy because i think most people get that kind of confusion even in their mother tongue. for example, in my country there are several dialects and languages and sometimes it is difficult for me to understand it. in english it is much more difficult TT and if we add the internet jargon to that, it already becomes much more complicated.

how do you manage to learn them? :)

I can't get the tenses right.
I have moments when I decide to start studying English ( again), I stick on this thing for some weeks, but every time when I solve exercises with English tenses, translations, I don't get a really good result, just a bit above 60%

Also, the way/ order I put the words in sentences, that's weird. For me it makes sense, because I use that way of talking with my native language, but it doesn't make such a sense in English.

oh I didn't mean dialect as in different pronunciation or words, but like sometimes words have different meanings depending on where in the coungtry you are
the different dialects just add to it, but I think you can get used to them way quicker

I learn them like I learn other vocabulary
looking it up, writing it down and then trying to use it myself

i feel that the internet is very collapsed with american english?? many of the expressions we use come from him, even in our mother tongues. and yet british english is what is teach in most schools. in the end we develop an accent that is a mixture of both hahaha i think it's interesting ^^

what is your mother tongue? ^^

the use of verbs is a bit difficult for me too, because verbs are missing in english that i do have in my mother tongue. the worst verbs for me to learn are modal verbs and conditionals. that shit is hard, i admire who say them without thinking

it is a good way to implement them in your vocabulary, yes! i constantly find myself looking in the urban dictionary hahahaha

i find the british accent very nice :)

for other people it can be difficult to understand depending on what region you are from, but I think I feel more attached to it because in my mother tongue I speak a dialect that is southern and in general it is difficult to understand even for people who speak the language natively!!

so don't feel bad, i'm sure your accent is beautiful ^^

Yea its good cus I don't like learning stuff on purpose, I just absorb stuff into my brain yes 👍 Like I don't know the grammar rules, but I do have decent grammar (at least if im writing a serious text, not so much on vp lol), same in norwegian, I have no idea about the rules but I just know them right. Internet and watching stuff has helped a lot too tho I think, because if the only english input u get is in school, u won't learn how to write informal or "think" in english as easily, if u know what I mean
