i frankly find the sudden interest from men in this case a disgusting display of misogyny. the way people online are talking about how amber heard must be lying because she's not presenting herself as the perfect victim. it's a bunch of armchair psychologists analyzing how she's either crying too much, or too little, or recounting things too perfectly, or not accurately at all. ergo she must be lying. how people react to this case is not just a reflection of what people think about amber heard, but a reflection of what is thought of abuse victims in general.
please know: i do NOT support amber heard. in fact, i believe she singlehandedly has done more to destroy the credibility of female victims than the #metoo movement has worked so hard to achieve.
yet i feel the massive interest from men, who will use this precedent as a motivation to disbelief all female victims, will make it even harder for female victims to come forward. every abuse case in the future will inevitable be linked to how amber heard lied, so how can we trust you?
the petition to remove amber heard from aquawoman has reached 3 million votes. where was this fervor for ansel elgort, marilyn manson, harvey weinstein, jared leto? most of these have SA cases that are corroborated by witnesses, few of these were punished, but most importantly, none of these cases received the attention from men as much as this case.
i am not going to ignore the fact that johnny depp suffered from heard's accusations: he lost movie and brand deals and people are rightfully angry about it. yet when the accusations surfaced, there was not nearly this much anger coming from men. in fact, there has not been this much anger from men anytime in the history of such publicized abuse cases. i am tired of pretending we don't know exactly why that is.
amber heard has become the token example of why women shouldn't be believed, and i think that sets a very dangerous precedent.
