My theory is that everybody is more or less racist. Before you get your panties in a twist over the word racist, let me explain. There are different types of racists. You can be a racist that is self-aware or you can be a racist without being aware of it. What does it mean to be racist? It simply means that you see some races as less than. If you're white and you consider your race to be superior and other races less valuable or less human, that would be one example of you being racist.
Although the usage of the words 'everybody' and 'racist' is a bit exaggerated, it's meant to demonstrate how casually racist we can be sometimes without knowing. The point of this thread isn't to say whether that is a good or a bad thing, it is only meant to demonstrate that it's happening whether we approve of it or not.
A white man is walking down the street, leading a bike. You don't think much of it.
A black man is walking down the street, leading a bike. You assume he stole it.
The same location, time of the day, body-language, you name it. The only difference between the two is the different races.
You need help from the cashier in a random grocery-store. You have no problem asking the cashier for help if he is white but you won't bother to ask if he is of another race since you, consciously or not, assume he wouldn't be able to understand or will do a poor job only because of his race.
I think mostly women do this (for obvious reasons) but when walking down a street, it's fine to walk by a white person but you'd rather cross the street if the person is of another race.
You might want to argue "but statistically..." but the reason we act this way (again, I'm not making a judgement on whether it's OK or not) is because we generalize people based on stereotypes. It's as simple as that.
