I did volume eating while counting calories for a while, which helped tremendously. Volume eating is nice, because it keeps you full even if you're dieting, and it makes it a habit to eat quite healthy and make some healthy lifestyle changes when dieting is over.
A side recommendation: if you're craving cake I will 100% recommend ridiculous brownies. The recipe gives you a fair amount of brownie for 150 calories. Dieting is easier if you don't restrict yourself too much, but instead try to compromise some days. If you're craving ice cream take a smaller portion and eat less dinner/lunch/breakfast or go for a run/exercise to burn more calories that day.
Also, add some exercise and workouts to your day. If you're already doing this: great, don't change that! The exercise will give some nice hormones that makes you feel happier and will also help your body to being healthier and less frail when you get older.
