Grete had been five when the river disappeared, splashing her way around in a pool in her mother's garden, a thrilling laughter escaping her throat.

It had been mid August. A hot spring followed by an even warmer summer.
Grete put the old picture down and placed the box on top her bed. She had turned 11 a few days ago, and her mother had fished the box out from storage just for the occasion. She hadn't thought anything about them before her mother had spoke.
"That was the day the river disappeared. The lake dried out up in the mountain, I think. It was what they said on the news. It shouldn't be long until- what day is it, again?"
"the fifteenth," grete said. "of August."
Her mother rose from the sofa. "it's tomorrow, grete." she turned the picture in her hand, the one with her in a pool, and as she'd though, the date August 16th was written in a blue ballpoint pen on the backside.
Someone continue it...
"Tomorrow the river should start slowly rising back." she continued.
