I don’t want to tell my boss I have schizoaffective disorder but if I don’t tell my boss I won’t get sick pay.
I talked to a friend about this but I don’t feel like he understood my worries. I’m afraid it will affect my job and that they will come up with another reason to let me go or give me less hours.

I don’t trust my boss to think it won’t impact my job but I also want the money I’m not getting

imo youre right to think that this would effect ur job. massive stigma comes with that diagnosis. is there really no way to get sick pay without disclosing why you were sick. does your job have an hr person so you dont have to go to like ur boss.

I would have to get a doctors note with the reason for why I have been gone and I would have to send it to my boss. I have been in hospital for a month now and only get paid for the first two weeks and anything more than two weeks you will have to get a doctors note (idk the correct english word for it).

Do you have to tell your boss what it is?
Here it's against the law, the doctors note just lists a very broad ID that doesn't give away a specific diagnosis.

Yes they write down the diagnosis and the symptoms that made you unable to work. I got one last time I was admitted but I never sent it in because I didn’t know I wasn’t getting paid.

do you have a disability act in your area? I know in the us the ADA provides accommodations for mental health disorders and firing someone for one would be considered discrimination.

I second @Claire on speaking to HR. See if you could qualify for programs or protections for people with disabilities. Maybe look into a lawyer, but if you can't afford it I get it.  Also see if there are any hotlines for disabled employees you could call

Much luck to you with your diagnosis, my mom was diagnosed with schizoaffective last year (well either that or bipolar I depending on who she saw) and it's a rough ass illness. Wouldn't wish it on anyone. My mom was fucking batshit, quit working, couldn't pay her phone bill without help, and refused to walk out the hallway (she climbed out the window because she thought her capped tooth would set off emf and wifi signals that would kill her). She's in a group home now.

also can you look into job coaching? there may be programs that can be covered by government insurance if you qualify. That way you could collect your money and also have a back up plan if they do fire you.

is there something like hippa though that entitles you to privacy? id discuss with the doctor if there is a way to write the note without disclosing a diagnosis.

I'm thinking of job coaching as a back-up in case she gets fired

idk how it is in her country but as an american I know job coaches help set you up with jobs that are a fit and will accomodate your disability

my autistic sister got a job at the library that way and her parent's insurance covered it

Firing someone for a mental health issue is considered discrimination here too but I'm worried she would come up with another reason and use that when really she's firing me for my diagnosis.

We have my boss and another person that is responsible for getting our pay out in time. And then we have two people that are on the phone to help us when we're out working or to take calls from clients. Pretty much everything goes through my boss first.

Thank you

That's a good idea I'm going to talk to the doctor about that

Last time i had to get a doctors note due to mental illness, they didn't specify which illness i had, just that i was in treatment / was sick.
Didn't have any issues with that.
