New New User Guide
Private
World famous

I feel like we could use a new guide for new users, so this is what I've made. I have been the mentor thing for new users for some time, and a lot of the questions popping up seems to be the same, so doing an overall FAQ and linking to older relevant threads seemed like a good idea. The website has changed a lot since the other guide was released, and I feel like some more in-depth explanation could be used.

First things first:

We are all happy you've joined this small niche corner of the internet, where we do less in FOMO and the usual speed of the internet, and have a bigger focus on a tightknit, safe community, where people can socialize and generally chat about a ton of things, while dressing their best.

The best thing to go for relatively fast is YouTube Star as a rank here. It gives you the ability to trade, and other users can send trades to you too. If you're not at least YouTube Star other users can't send trade to you, which sucks. It makes getting a wardrobe that isn't the starter wardrobe much easier, and it opens up for all the functions related to the dress-up part of the game.

Sometimes we get an influx of trolls or bots, where it becomes a minimum requirement to comment in threads too, and if that's the case for when you started; I'm so fucking sorry. It feels terrible to be here while wearing that muzzle. It happened when I started.

The best way to earn fans fast is probably to battle a higher-level popstar here. The reward is often high, and I think it's the fastest way to do it. Performing, singing and dancing can be okay too, if you're not busy, but it can be frustrating. If you play some of the games on the side while battling, I think it goes relatively fast to reach the golden level.

You can find the battling page here. You can either do a public one or send a request to someone. You can potentially make a forum asking for a battle, but I am also always open to receive one.

You can change your look in your wardrobe. I think the new user guide already walks you through this, but buy something in Fashion Shop, or sort by "popdollar" in Auctions/Marketplaza and see if there's anything available.

If you buy stuff from the Marketplaza Sets please close all Virtual Popstar tabs besides one before you buy. Your currency will be eaten without giving you a set, if you have more than one tab open. This is a bug. If you buy a set and don't get it from Marketplaza, please report it here so an admin can look into it and help you.

The second most important thing here, is probably how you earn currency and get some clothing in your wardrobe, so you don't look as terrible.

There is this very good guide on the currency on VP.
There are three currencies on the website: (popdollar) (credits)  (promotion points)
You might already have realized, that popdollars aren't really that useful or worth that much here. The main currency is instead credits.

Popdollar you get by playing the games, performing and if you join fashion contest with popdollar. It is therefore the currency that is the easiest to get on the website. You get the most out of them in the Fashion Shop.

Credits are, as I said, the main currency on the website. There is unfortunately not an easy way to get these, as they're not used as rewards in-game in general, and the easiest way to obtain them is to buy them. There will often be a perk in buying them, as you often will get some items with a purchase too, that our lovely designers have made. (This is called Mega Credit Month, and the current sets can be found here.)

The last currency, promotion points, is the most rare currency on the website. You get this by making other people join the website using your link (which can be found here) This currency can be used for rarer items in Fashion Shop or to exchange with credits, if you want them more.

It is possible to exchange one currency for another with another user. So if you have a ton of popdollar, you might find someone who'll exchange some for credits. Try creating a thread about how many you're selling, and see if anyone's interested.
The current exchange rates are as follows:
1000   = 1
150-250   = 1

We all do know, that purchasing currency on a website you've just visited and aren't quite sure about isn't what most people want to do though. This is often mentioned as a way to improve the website, but we normal models can't implement this feature ourselves, and instead I'll give different ways to earn credits:

You can make an exchange request
As explained above, you can exchange your popdollar for credits, if other users are interested.

You can join a competition
Sometimes the users (and in theory, the teams) will host competitions, where you either can win credits or a set (depending). You will be able to sell a set or item you aren't interested in, to get credits if that's the case. Competitions can differ in theme, action or similar. Dress up is very common, and you can usually use other user's wardrobe (depending on the rules) to create an outfit, so you're not dependent on your own items when you first start.

You can check some of the currently active competitions out on the link below (last updated 02.05.2024):

June Activities (FT)

You can style people
Sometimes you can earn some credits for styling other users on the website. You shouldn't style people and then ask them for credits, but instead create a thread, where you offer to style people in exchange for a fee. This can give you some credits.

You can sell different services
Are you good at drawing? Or making small banners? If you're creative at heart, you might be able to earn some credits in exchange for a thing you're good at. Rates will depend on what you're offering of course, and what examples you can give.

You can sell stuff
You might have been lucky and gotten items in a code, the Wheel of Fortune, Backstage Pass or by winning Hall of Fame (more on this later). If you don't find the sets or items interesting you can sell them, either by making a thread or by putting it in Marketplaza.

You can ask in a thread for donations
This will probably not be the best way to earn anything. Most of the users here are used to people not staying, so sending resources to them, so they rot away isn't something most people are keen on. You can, however, try, but the success rate will be much lower compared to the options above.

Sometimes some users will donate stuff to new users. But there is also rich opportunity to get clothing and items on a weekly basis on the website. I have already mentioned some of the ways, but will give an in-depth explanation here:

Wheel of Fortune
You get a free spin daily in Wheel of Fortune, and one of the prizes will be a set or an item. The prize changes weekly, so there's always opportunity to get more clothing by logging in and using this feature. You can also earn credits in WOF, but if you don't have a manager, you'll only be able to get credits from WOF once weekly.

Backstage Pass
A new feature on the website is backstage pass, where you get an item daily (this is currently in a test phase and might change) by completing a quest.

Hall of Fame
We also have Hall of Fame, where you can win a new set weekly by either:
- Being in the top 10 of this week in one of the games
- Being on the Hall of Fame list under Statistics, which you can do by performing a lot, winning battles, fashions contests or if you've invited people.

You can get duplicates of a weekly set by entering Hall of Fame on more than one list. So if you're top 10 in pop matcher, but also on most skilled you'll get two sets.

Codes
There has already been made two very good guides on codes, which you can find here:
Ninas guide on codes
Rottes guide on codes

I will just add my own commentary to the above, by saying that codes have been rather limited in the past few months due to different reasons. You can, however, find links to Social Media (where codes might be) here, and also keep an eye on this thread to check whether there's new ones. If it's on the front page it's time to look. Sometimes codes will also be available in shouts or in threads made by other teams. (Read more in the guides above)

If you're browsing this site as a newbie, you might think it looks a little dead. Most of us are to be found in Hi Thread, which is where we mostly chat about daily doings and it kinda functions as a group chat for friends. Come say hi here! It seems daunting and scary, but none of us bite (unless you consent to it of course…) and we can all become fast friends.

It is of course also always allowed to make your own thread or join some of the other discussions happening here. Most of us will want to be social with others, but it might be a little slow, depending on the time you're writing. Make a thread to introduce yourself maybe?!

If any popstars have something to add please comment, and I'll try to include it.
If you're new and still have questions, write to your mentor, ask here or make a new thread. I'll make a FAQ here, if there's any additional questions.

FAQ/OTHER Q&A'S
Do people on VP like cats?
yes

Is there a way to check in game items that aren't in shop?
unfortunately not! you'll have to lurk marketplace or specific designers' wardrobe. If you want to browse big wardrobes go check out Encrede, Nanami or Duchess wardrobes!

I struggled a little bit with this when I started, so I will add a smaller comment on it here but not in main, because others might find it useful.

You can link pictures by clicking on the small picture icon beside the YouTube Icon in the square, where you write a comment. It has to be a link for it to pop up.

All picture links have to end on .jpg, .jpeg, .png or .gif
if a picture you're trying to link doesn't have this in the end of the link the link will be seen as invalid.

You can upload your own pictures on a picture uploader website and link them as well. I usually use imgbb.com because it's fast, but you can also use IMGUR or your preferred website for image upload to share. Just remember they have to end on the above to actually work here.
OOPS: IT HAS COME TO MY ATTENTION THAT SOME PEOPLE CAN'T SEE PICTURES UPLOADED FROM IMGBB. IF YOU WANT TO SHARE YOUR BEAUTIES WITH EVERYONE IN THE COMMUNITY, PLEASE USE IMGUR INSTEAD
