I think if you're crafty, there are a lot of aspects about living alone and being in charge of your space that can be enjoyable, i.e. today I bought hardware and modified the top of the cat tree to be a shelf for my plants since my cat's afraid of that height and never uses it 
And I didn't have to check in with anyone for permission to do that lol
