new uni year and omg they had no business saying advanced math stuff was "just basic hs math" and saying if you don't get x y z "maybe this degree isn't for you" etc

mate

the students are there to LEARN. not everyone has a strong stem bg and that's okay!! you don't have to practice math your whole life and be some genius to do a stem degree

pls why are they so unnecessary cruel

idk it hits different now that i'm done with the first year and aware that it actually isn't okay to speak to new students like that

i got a random memory of that "maybe this degree isn't for you" lecture and remembered how some people actually left the lecture hall after he said that : (

omg i looked back at my history of japan notes one time. and this course is taught when u just start. so u learn like, hiragana and katakana and very simple kanji. can say very simple stuff. you dont have any proficiency speaking the langauge yet at all.

but they kept using so many japanese words for everything, which i guess makes sense? like yeah, we ARE in a japanese history class. i guess it makes sense to call it jomon jidai instead of "age of jomon" and stuff. but all these words that we didnt know yet used to confuse me sooo much, even tho it was actually really simple words.
i also took the time to try n copy the kanji for everything even tho it took up too much time where i couldnt properly listen and i copied them wrong/super badly because once again, didnt even learn all these words yet, nor how to write them

i did later in theatre and literature class also have teachers who were offended we didnt even know the concept of mujou(beauty of fleeting things because they will soon pass, e.g. cherry blossoms). like yeah?? because u never taught us?? how else would we know of it !!! always gave snide remarks that we should already know xy

i might have stayed that lecture but an assistant professor (from that same course) made me cry once and then i never attended the workgroup again. i asked him for help with some homework i had partially* done in advance and he just kept asking me with an increasingly loud voice what's the answer and i just kept saying idk mate that's why i'm asking for help. and then at some point i started to cry and while i left the room in tears he said something about some people just not being a fit for a university degree??????????

the same assistant professor also called me a special needs kid bc i have autism

wtf was that course!!!

i think a part of it is that when they studied it was still a magister system, and not a 3 year bachelors degree ... so THEY had more time and more extensive courses abt everything, but we didnt??? like we are just hearing abt japanese literature for the first time. we know NOTHING. u are our first course ??? why would we already have prior knowledge abt common motievs in poetry

my programming teacher was the same way they advertized it as beginner friendly which it should be (bcs all other courses were as well) but he expected ppl to already know the basics (and more) and pretty much started with advanced knowledge so everyone who didnt know was left behind and failed which was like 80% of the course. Mind you... most ppl didnt even want to become programmers and were just obligated to do it and its only one course out of 6. He did stuff in the first sem that IT ppl did for like 6 semesters.. this has been going on for years and was a known problem since you pretty much get kicked out of uni if you do not pass 3 times. The only way they could deal with this problem was opening a new uni course that mostly focuses on design.... im still mad thinking about this asshole i lost 2 years bcs i started uni over in the new study course...

germany?

ugh yeah programming teachers/profs are often just like math ones and make the courses ridiculously hard just to stroke their own ego  mine were luckily very nice and started from super basic most simple things ever but my calculus teacher started yapping about how to calculate some neuron learning weight bias whatever stuff during the THIRD lecture we ever had, like when we all had JUST started uni

but yes very evil of him to make a course that people are obligated to take so hard that 80% fail

hope the new study course was the right fit for you though it was super unfair that you had to do that
